An epidermis graft is used to permanently replace broken or missing epidermis or to provide a temporary wound protecting. This protecting is necessary because the skin protects the whole body from fluid loss, aids in temperature regulation, and inhibits disease-causing bacteria or viruses from entering the whole body. Skin that is broken extensively by burns or non-healing wounds can compromise the health and well-being of the patient.
Skin graft can sometimes be made by the simple process of cutting a piece of healthy skin from one part of the body, such as the back or the upper leg, and sewing it to the injured place. Small arteries from the tissues surrounding the injured area then grow into the graft, nourish it with blood and promote normal growth.
Based on the location and size of the injury, the function can be performed under common or local pain-killer.
